About Brian Frank-Photographer | Retoucher

“Photography records the gamut of feelings written on the human face, the beauty of the earth and skies that man has inherited, and the wealth and confusion man has created. It is a major force in explaining man to man.”
– Edward Steichen

Brian C. Frank is an award-winning freelance photojournalist from Des Moines, Iowa. Photographing for The New York Times, Reuters and Polaris Images, Brian’s images have been seen in publications and on websites around the world. Selections from Fight Night have been shown on the New York Times Lens blog, Burn Magazine, and in curated gallery exhibits in Des Moines, Minneapolis and New York.

Brian began studying photography on a part-time basis as a creative outlet. Those classes quickly developed into a passion, but he did not know what he wanted to do. It was not until the first anniversary of hurricane Katrina that he found the direction. Always being a bit of an activist, Brian was angered that a year after the hurricane hit, a great city like New Orleans was still in ruins. After spending a week in New Orleans photographing the devastation and talking to the residents, he found that telling stories with the camera was what he needed to do.

For more than fifteen years Brian was also a photography retoucher where he led image retouching and post-processing for a broad range of magazines, including Better Homes & Gardens, ensuring high-quality images across interiors, fashion, product, and food photography. He oversaw the collaboration with art directors and photographers to develop workflows that improved photographic processes and project turnaround times.

Since moving to the Netherlands in 2020, Brian has expanded his photography to include fashion, commercial and fine-art. He has developed photography clients that include Calvin Klein, Karl Lagerfeld and Tommy Hilfiger, while also retouching for high-end clients such as Coca-Cola and several commercial photographers in the US and Europe.

Here’s some things others have said about his work:

Frankly, Brian Frank is the best image retouching and color editing person I have known in 30 years as a commercial photographer. He is also possibly the bravest and most honest photographer I know.

It’s rare that could come across standout talent like Brian. I had the pleasure of working side by side with him for 14 years at Meredith Corporation. He expertly filled the role of an Imaging Specialist for our Content Center team, working on major magazines like Better Homes and Gardens. He handled even the toughest jobs effortlessly and his ability to juggle multiple projects at once made a dramatic difference in the productivity level of our department. Brian would make a great asset to any team!
