There is no shortage of tutorials on beauty and skin retouching. Search for Photoshop retouching techniques and you will find thousands of videos on frequency separation, dodge and burn for skin, liquify, and portrait color grading. What you will find far less of is a serious discussion of architectural and interiors retouching — a discipline with its own distinct demands, its own technical vocabulary, and its own philosophy about when to stop.
I spent sixteen years as a color retoucher and premedia specialist at Meredith Corporation, where my work included retouching interiors for Better Homes & Gardens — one of the most widely read home and design publications in the United States. On a magazine cover or a 10 page interior spread, every wall needs to look like the right color, every fabric needs to read correctly, and the image as a whole needs to feel like a real, livable space — not a render. That experience shaped how I think about architectural retouching: the goal is not perfection in the artificial sense, but believable excellence. The image should look like the best version of what was actually there.
This post walks through my retouching workflow for an interiors image, step by step, using a real project as a reference. Every step uses non-destructive techniques — meaning nothing is permanently altered, every decision is revisable, and when the photographer comes back with revisions, the process does not require starting over.
The Starting Image

The base image is a living room shot at dusk, with a dramatic sunset visible through floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors. This is one of the most technically challenging scenarios in architectural photography: a bright exterior light source competing with warm interior ambient light and fireplace glow, all in the same frame. The camera cannot capture the full dynamic range in a single exposure — the interior reads too dark when the window is correctly exposed.
This is exactly the kind of image where retouching begins before you even open Photoshop in earnest.
Step 1: Exposure Merging — Lifting the Shadows Non-Destructively
The problem: The base exposure is correct for the exterior sunset and the overall composition. But the foreground — the chairs, the rug, the floor — falls into shadow. Interior surfaces are underlit relative to what the eye would naturally balance when standing in the room.
The solution: A second exposure of the same scene, shot at a longer shutter speed or higher ISO, captures the shadow detail the base image loses. In Photoshop, this bright exposure is placed on a layer above the base image and blended selectively using a layer mask — painting in only the areas where the lifted exposure improves the image, while leaving the correctly exposed regions untouched.
This is non-destructive by design. The base image is never altered. The bright exposure layer can be adjusted, its mask refined, or its opacity reduced at any point in the process. Curves adjustment layers can also be used for targeted dodging and burning — brightening or darkening specific regions with precision — again through layer masks that preserve every decision as an editable state.
What to watch for: Blending exposures incorrectly is one of the most common ways interiors retouching starts to look artificial. Halos around furniture edges, unnatural brightness in mid-tone areas, and mismatched color between the blended regions are all signs the merge has gone too far. The blended result should feel like what a well-balanced eye would see standing in the room — not like a HDR composite from 2009.
After this step, the interior reads with detail and warmth while the sunset remains present and correctly exposed.

Step 2: Cleanup — Removing Distractions Without Altering the Space

The problem: No interior, however well styled and photographed, arrives at retouching without something that needs to go. Fabric wrinkles and sofa cushion folds that read as sloppy. Electrical outlets on walls. Power cords trailing across floors. Dust. Scuffs. Anything that pulls the viewer’s eye away from the architecture and toward the mundane reality of lived-in spaces.
The solution: This step is methodical and requires a careful eye. Working on a stamped or cloned layer above the base image — never on the original — each distraction is identified and removed using a combination of the Clone Stamp, Healing Brush, Patch Tool, and Content-Aware Fill. The choice of tool depends on the surrounding texture: a cord on a flat hardwood floor calls for a different approach than a wrinkle in a textured linen cushion.
A useful practice is to annotate the image first — marking problem areas in a contrasting color before making a single edit. This ensures nothing is missed and allows the photographer to review the hit list before work begins, which can save significant revision time.
What to watch for: The temptation in cleanup is to over-retouch. A sofa that has no wrinkles anywhere reads as plastic. A stone wall with every natural variation removed looks like a render. The standard should be: would a careful stylist have caught this before the shutter fired? If yes, remove it. If it is inherent to the material, leave it. Architectural retouching should enhance reality, not replace it.
Step 3: Color Cast Correction — The Most Transformative Step

The problem: Color casts in architectural and interiors photography are not a sign of poor photography. They are physics. Every light source in a room — tungsten bulbs, LED fixtures, natural daylight, firelight — has its own color temperature. Every surface those light sources strike reflects that color back into the room, casting it onto adjacent walls, floors, and furniture. A warm sunset through glass doors will throw amber across the right side of the room. Overhead recessed lighting may push cyan into the ceiling. Stone walls can go cool. Hardwood floors can shift orange.
The camera, shooting to a single white balance setting, cannot compensate for all of these simultaneously. The result is that color in an interior image rarely balances the way the eye naturally corrects for it in person.
The solution: Color correction in architectural retouching is done regionally, not globally. A global curves or levels adjustment cannot address the fact that the left wall is neutral and the right wall is casting warm. The image needs to be assessed in zones — ceiling, walls, floor, furniture — and each zone corrected independently using masked adjustment layers.
The goal is balance: color should read consistently from left to right and from top to bottom. Neutral surfaces — white walls, gray concrete, natural linen — are the calibration points. If those surfaces are neutral, the rest of the image generally follows. If a series of images was shot throughout a single day, they should all read as though they were shot at the same time — a cohesive set, not a collection of individual images at different color temperatures.
What to watch for: This is the step where architectural retouching most commonly crosses into artificial territory. An over-corrected interior loses the warmth of its light sources, and a room that was beautifully lit at golden hour ends up looking like a cold studio. The correction should neutralize unwanted casts — not strip the image of atmosphere. Firelight should still feel warm. Evening light should still feel like evening.
This step produces the most dramatic visible improvement of any stage in the workflow. A well-executed color correction can make an average photograph look exceptional.
Step 4: Final Exposure, Contrast, and Targeted Refinements

The problem: After exposure merging and color correction, the image is close — but rarely finished. Small areas of imbalance remain. A corner that reads slightly dark. A ceiling that has slightly less presence than it should. A foreground element that needs to come forward or recede.
The solution: This step is the equivalent of a final mix in audio production — small adjustments that collectively elevate the image from good to polished. Curves adjustment layers with targeted masks handle localized brightness and contrast refinements. Dodge and burn — applied non-destructively through curves layers set to Screen or Multiply blend modes — address specific areas without touching the rest of the image.
The decisions at this stage are largely a matter of the photographer’s personal vision. There is no single correct answer to whether the foreground chairs should be slightly darker to frame the scene, or whether the ceiling should be lifted slightly to add volume. These are aesthetic choices, and the retoucher’s role is to have the technical vocabulary to execute them — not to impose a particular look.
What to watch for: The instinct at this stage is to keep going. Restraint is a skill. When an image stops improving with each additional adjustment, it is finished. The eye adapts quickly to whatever it is looking at, and retouchers who stare at an image for too long begin making corrections that exist only in their perception. Stepping away and returning with fresh eyes — or checking the image against the uncorrected original — is a reliable reset.
Step 5: Deliver and Revise — The Advantage of Non-Destructive Workflow

The result: A fully retouched image is delivered to the photographer for review. At this stage, every adjustment made throughout the process — the exposure blend, the cleanup work, the color corrections, the final refinements — exists on its own layer or adjustment layer, each with its own mask, each independently editable.
This is the practical payoff of a non-destructive workflow. When the photographer reviews the image and asks for a change — and they will, because that is the nature of the collaboration — no decision has to be undone from scratch. The color correction for the right wall is a masked curves layer that can be dialed back in thirty seconds. The exposure blend can be refined. A cleanup element can be revisited.
Non-destructive retouching is not just a best practice — it is a professional standard. It protects the original image, enables meaningful revision conversations, and allows the work to be reopened months later if the photographer decides to use the image in a new context.
A Note on Philosophy
Architectural and interiors retouching sits in an interesting space. Architectural photography has always involved an element of idealization. A staging stylist adjusts the scene before the photographer arrives. Lighting equipment is brought in. The shoot is scheduled for the best available natural light. The retoucher is the last person in that chain, and the question of how far to go is a genuine one.
My view, developed over many years retouching interiors for publication, is that the standard should be: could this image represent a real space, at its best, on its best day? Color that was never on those walls crosses the line. A wrinkle that would have been smoothed by a stylist with an extra thirty seconds does not. Architecture should look like architecture — not like a CGI rendering of the idea of architecture.
The retoucher’s job is to be invisible. When the work is done well, no one asks how the retouching was done. They simply say the image looks beautiful.
